I have had a few blogs posts recently about being careful when deploying lync into a virtual environment and i stand by them you need to be CAREFUL! Plan Plan Plan!

however just to help…. i said i would write this and list some info on what you can virtualize

So here it is and i am just for this purpose going to reference against a standard edition server and not the enterprise deployment

When deploying a Standard Edition server in a virtualized environment, the only server roles that can be deployed with it are the Director, Monitoring Server, Archiving Server, and Edge Server.

Directors cannot be virtualized in a Standard Edition server deployment.

Mediation can also be virtualized but this needs to be considered… the latency in a virtualized environment can sometimes be enough to make the user experience for voice poor and hinder adoption.

Hope it helps!
